Going Home to Another Way – October 10, 2020

Marianne introduces a category from philosopher and theologian John Caputo called “weak theology.” That name is intended to provoke attention if not consternation from those who assume and prefer a “strong theology:” the claim that God is almighty and sovereign. Marianne discusses some implications of a God without Sovereignty including our responsibility for the well-being of the world and one another.

One of our participants, Jeff Creswell quoted from this poem at our plenary session In October 10. Many have asked for it. Here it is. Thank you Jeff.

Returning to Kindness
I am returning to kindness
a place where I am strong in my softness
I will start by kissing all of my scars
and washing them in rain
collecting dust from long journeys off my feet.
The way they carry weariness
from crossing rivers that should
have had bridges.
I will return to build crossing
paths over waters
that reminded me to
be kind

  1. Thanks so much for sharing. It is a much more helpful & meaningful way to think about God. Also looking forward to listening to more of Meeting Marcus Again for First time as I have also tried to read everything he wrote. Am sharing with others.

  2. Thanks for the conversation. I regret I wasn’t there for actual event but ‘tuned in’ just today (Thursday). I’m hoping that I can join in for the next event; it will depend on whether I can work out the GMT equivalent.
