The Difficult Cross and Wounded Glory

The March 12, 2022 Second Saturday Conversation explores the cross and glory.

We are in the season of Lent in the church year, the time when the Christian narrative takes us on the final journey with Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem where he is publicly executed on a cross, the death penalty for insurrectionists. Borrowing from the work of Jack Caputo and Marcus Borg we will explore this topic, in particular, the difficulty of the cross, wounded glory, and the weakness of God.

Further Reading on the Cross

Jack’s book, Cross and Cosmos, and Marc and Dom Crossan’s book, The Last Week, will clarify and/or challenge our thoughts and understanding of Jesus’ execution and resurrection.

I am deeply indebted to Jack Caputo for stirring my thoughts and reframing my understanding of this part of the Christian story. Jack’s important work also gave me the courage to share my effort publicly. I preached at my home parish here in Bend, Oregon on February 27, 2022; I include a link to that sermon here. It might serve as a preview of our discussion March 12.

Below is a recording of the March 12 conversation.

We also have the chat from the session here.

  1. It was a really great talk. Thank-you. I’m coming to this way of thinking more and more.
