At our February 14 Second Saturday Conversation I attempted to reflect on “week two” the second half of Jack Caputo’s book What to Believe? Twelve Brief Lessons in Radical Theology. I did not provide a concise summary. Nor was able to crystallize salient points to help us on our journey to radical theology. This is not a shortcoming of Jack’s book or work. Rather a shortcoming of my effort. That said, the Second Saturday community was able to rally and volley. I hope there are some thoughts you can engage and explore. Perhaps the following quote from Jack in “week two” can serve as a summary and call for this session.
“In an axiology (what we value most) everything comes down to love. If you want to know what you really believe, ask yourself what you really love. Really believing is not a matter of doctrines and propositions but of love. We do not put our love where our belief is, we put our believing where our love is. We do not love because we believe; we believe because we love…
So now the question is, what do we love? What do we really love? Is it worthy of us? Is it worthy of God, who is love? Are we making ourselves worthy of what we love, of what is going on in the name ( of) ‘God’?…”
Our next Second Saturday is March 14. We are delighted to welcome back Mark Oakley, Dean of Southwick Cathedral, London. His book A Splash of Words: Believing in Poetry is a wonderful introduction to his thoughts and depths.
I look forward to seeing you in March. With special guest Mark Oakley.
