Modern and Post Modern Thinking
On October 9, in our Second Saturday Conversation, we had a discussion with Jack Caputo who discussed Jacques Derrida and the birth of Deconstruction. Deconstruction is a “style of thinking” that examines and challenges presuppositions about meaning and truth.
In this session, we discussed modern and post modern thinking. Taking the idea of Deconstruction further we explore the idea of modernity. What does it mean to be modern and how does that affect how we thinking about Christianity? If thought processes are always evolving, how can we explore what is “true”?
In addition, below this please find materials that were referenced during our session and the chat transcript here.
Isaiah 35:1
The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; and the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose.
Waiting for Lightning
Steven Curtis Chapman
Standing on the edge of the truth,
Looking out at the view
Of all you used to believe,
From where you are you can see you’re far away from home.
Echoes of the life you once knew
Call out to you from across the divide,
And you know it’s time to step back over the line,
But you’re…
Waiting for lightning,
A sign that its time for a change;
And you’re listening for thunder,
While He quietly whispers your name.
Night falls and the curtain goes down;
No ones around,
It’s just you and the truth.
As you lie in wait
For a feeling to take you by storm,
Somewhere in the depths of your heart,
Where its empty and dark, there’s a flicker of light,
And the Spirit calls,
But do you notice at all;
Are you…
Waiting for lightning,
A sign that its time for a change;
And you’re listening for thunder,
While He quietly whispers your name.
But the sign and the word
Have already been given,
And now it’s by faith
We must look and we must listen,
Instead of…
Waiting for lightning,
A sign that it’s time for a change;
And you’re listening for thunder,
While He quietly whispers your name.
Candlemas
Denise Lovertov
With certitude
Simeon opened
ancient arms
to infant light.
Decades
Before the cross, the tomb
and the new life.
What depth
of faith he drew on,
turning illumined
towards deep night.
