Following that event many asked us to continue to provide opportunity to explore and re-imagine what it means to be “religious\,” “spiritual\,” “Christian\,” “none\,” “other…”. We are doing just that on the second Saturday of the month in Bend. We invite you to loosen your moorings and venture with us “Into the Deep.” All are welcome. \nApril 13th Discussion – Palm Sunday and Resurrection\nOn Saturday\, April 13\, the day before Palm Sunday\, we will have our final conversation and plunge “Into the Deep” for this spring. \nThe topic will be Palm Sunday and Resurrection. We will consider why the story of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem is provocative and important. And how the story poignantly contrasts rival kingdoms. We will also puzzle about resurrection\, even resurrection of the body\, and what we think it means for us today. \nMarianne Borg and Bill Ellis will continue “Into the Deep” on second Saturdays beginning in October\, 2019 and continuing through April 2020. We will meet at St. Helen’s Hall at Trinity Episcopal Church\, Bend. \nIf you have not been with us before\, come April 13 and be part of the conversation. It is not too late to join us. According to the Christian liturgical year we will be in the season of Lent. Lent is a time when the question is called about what matters to us\, what we think is possible\, what we think about the human condition\, and the purpose or meaning of life. In keeping with the prompt of the season we will explore WORLDVIEW; our “philosophy of life” or concept of the world. Worldviews are not just individual. They reflect society’s understanding of life as well. We will reflect on our own view of things\, how we got there\, and how it shapes our hopes and fears. This month’s topic: THE SACRED. \nA common dichotomy in religion has been between the sacred and the profane or secular. The sacred being powerful and awe inspiring\, transcending the humdrum of everyday life. The profane being everything else. This strong dualism was long considered to be a universal in religion. But it isn’t. We will explore our understanding of the sacred\, how it can redirect a life positively or coercively\, and reflect on the importance of how we see and why. \nYou do not need to know anything about Emile Durkheim or Mircea Eliade to participate! This month they will explore MYSTICISM; why it might not only be important but imperative to reexamine and redefine it. At best mysticism has been considered an experience of union with ultimate reality. More pejoratively it has been considered esoteric\, occult\, supernatural\, nebulous\, fuzzy\, privatized. Albeit a realm available to “religious specialists\,” which excludes most of us. We want to unfetter the “mystical experience” from “secret” or “hidden” knowledge and bring it into the every day. All are on the second Saturday of the month\, beginning November 10th\, and will begin at 9 AM. Everyone is welcome to attend\, whether or not you were able to attend the original session with Michael Morwood. \nRev. Marianne Borg\, founder of the Marcus J. DESCRIPTION:Days of Awe and Wonder: How to be a Christian in the 21st Century is a new collection of writings by the late Marcus Borg. Using Marcus’ book we will review some of the foundational affirmations and understandings that enabled him – and so many of us — to see the person of Jesus anew and discern what is the heart of Christianity. Marcus insisted that we all apprehend and experience the Sacred\, The More\, God\, that within which we live and move and have our being. Too often\, however\, “we do not see it.” In addition to reviewing Marcus’ work\, we will reflect on our understandings of Christianity and its place in this complex\, questioning and religiously pluralistic world. We will also use the work of a variety of poets and attend to their “eloquent listening” in hopes of helping us see again and hear afresh the hope that calls to us through days of fear and trembling to days of awe and wonder. \nMarianne Borg is the widow of Marcus Borg. She is a retired Episcopal priest and Founding Chair of the Marcus J. Borg Foundation. She and Marcus have been part of the Ring Lake Ranch experience for many years\, which was a transformative environment and community for them both.
