SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - September 10\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:RSVP Here \nSecond Saturday Conversation\nThere has never been one Christianity. Arguably there has never been one Jesus either. The chronological New Testament is not our focus this year. But the “evolution of the word\,” capitalized or not\, will be. And the fact that all things change. \nAll things change. Everything. Nothing is static. Not even the truth. The truth is more elusive than we think. But that doesn’t mean anything goes. Or that nothing really matters. How we live matters. But truth is experienced in a given frame\, a particular context. And those frames and contexts and our angle of vision changes as our understanding of self and world and cosmos change. By necessity we find ourselves changing with the changed. And so must Christianity. \nAll sessions are recorded and can be found a few days after they happen by clicking on the Second Saturday link at the top of the website and all sessions are in Pacific time. \nSeptember 10 Discussion – evolution of the word: all things change\nWe will be holding these conversations on Zoom. Please register once per household to receive a link for the event with login information. This link will be sent the day before the event. \nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - April 9\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:RSVP Here \nSecond Saturday Conversation – Does Religion Have a Future?\nAll sessions are recorded and can be found a few days after they happen by clicking on the Second Saturday link at the top of the website and all sessions are in Pacific time. \nApril 9 Discussion – Telling the story again anew\nWe will be holding these conversations on Zoom. Please register once per household to receive a link for the event with login information. This link will be sent the day before the event. \nDietrich Bonhoeffer\, who was executed by the Nazis on April 9\, 1945\, described the possibility of a “religionless Christianity.” In modernity\, he said\, we have come to realize that “everything gets along fine without God.” “The world has come of age\,” and humankind has attained its “adulthood.” As humankind becomes more and more\, God becomes less and less\, like the last fading smile of the Cheshire cat (Julian Huxley). This puts religion in the position of defending itself by trying to return humankind to its pre-modern adolescent dependence where it can exploit human weakness. Against this\, Bonhoeffer’s proposal is\, “Before God and with him we live without God.” Where Bonhoeffer spoke of “religionless” Christianity\, and Bultmann of “demythologizing” it\, Tillich criticized its “supernaturalism.” Together they laid the foundation of radical theology. They demystified religion and treated it as finite\, fallible human articulation of the mystery of our lives. Taking these groundbreaking insights as his point of departure\, Jack Caputo will offer an analysis of future of “religion” and of its uneasy relationship to “radical theology.” For Jack\, the two are not antagonists – once theology is deprived of its supernaturalist illusions\, radical theology is not viewed as proposing another\, competing religion trying to replace the confessional traditions. The confessional religious bodies are the only ones that “exist\,” under the concrete historical conditions of space and time\, while radical theology is their inner disturbance\, an inner restlessness\, reminding them of the unconditional from which they spring. Without radical theology\, the confessional traditions would reify\, rigidify\, mystify – but without the confessional traditions\, radical theology would be deprived of one of its most familiar and accessible expressions and find other opportunities to make itself felt\, like art. The question is whether that in fact is what is taking place\, as religion makes itself increasingly unbelievable\, more and more the shelter of the undereducated and reactionary. The point of deconstruction is to give things a future\, and question is whether “religion” has a future\, or even deserves to have a future\, or maybe it is time to move on. \nNOTE TO READERS: The above is dense and highly informative. But as my friend and colleague Jeff Creswell said we don’t need PhD’s to wonder aloud about all this. We at Second Saturday Conversation have also drawn on the likes of Kermit the Frog to help us navigate murky waters as well. We are all on a learning curve here. It is a great place to be. Join us. \nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - January 8\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:RSVP Here \nSecond Saturday Conversation\nAll sessions are recorded and can be found a few days after they happen by clicking on the Second Saturday link at the top of the website and all sessions are in Pacific time. \nRev. Marianne Borg welcomes you to continue the conversation with Jack Caputo on prayer\, spirituality and radical theology. \nIn a helpful and engaging article Jack wrote in August\, 2021\, the question is posed: Do radical theologians pray? His response: Like mad! \nWe have been exploring “radical theology.” Or put another way\, what stirs beneath confessional belief claims and practices and doctrines and dogmas and texts and institutions and rites. What gives rise to those constructions? That question and consequent probing and seeking unsettles theological claims. Which is why radical theology is seen as radical. Radical theology is not content with what is constructed. It is always restless for what stirs us\, calls us\, and holds promise for the future; a future we can’t see coming but hope for nonetheless. \nSo\, within radical theology\, what is it to pray? Jack suggests that prayer cannot be “shut up within orthodox confessional limits.” I like the double entendre of shut up. Prayer he says belongs to our restless hearts\, it is a response before it is an address\, it belongs to a prior and deeper structure than dogmas or doctrine. Using his language and categories\, prayer belongs to a theopoetic space he calls event. Now this may sound too abstract. Or undefined. But prayer and the name of God is not “a theoretical object“ but as he says it “is a form of life.” \nSo what is it to pray? What kind of madness is it when we seek and weep and pray. We have all sought and wept and prayed. So what is stirring in our prayers and tears\, in our hopes for real life. What are we participating in when we pray? \nWe will explore prayer. And spirituality. And provide plenty of time for you to ask Jack about what is prayer and what is taking place or might be when we do. \nJoin us for this conversation. The topic of prayer is always on our minds. Well\, more exactly\, it is always in our hearts. This time with Jack will help us as we think and imagine\, hope and yes\, pray. \nYou need not have attended a previous conversation to be part of this one. But radical theology is the framework for our inquiry. \nIn advance\, thanks to Jack for being with us. And for his prayers and tears. Prayers and tears which he insists may blind us but his prayers and tears have illumined our way. \nJanuary 8 Discussion – Telling the story again anew\nWe will be holding these conversations on Zoom. Please register once per household to receive a link for the event with login information. This link will be sent the day before the event. \nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - October 9\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:RSVP Here \nSecond Saturdays\nRev. Marianne Borg welcomes you to continue the conversation. \nOct 9 Discussion – Telling the story again anew\nOctober 9 is the death date of Jacques Derrida. (1930-2004). He is best known for developing the analysis called deconstruction. I for one am unable to fathom the work of Derrida. And for many years ignored it. It did not make a debut into my thinking until I read Jack Caputo. Who does understand deconstruction. And Derrida. So Jack is a secondary source. But it doesn’t get better than Jack doing Jacques. I asked Jack if he would join us October 9 in honor of Derrida. And to share with us how Derrida’s work influenced his own and why he thinks the work is important. Don’t be intimidated by Caputo\, Derrida or deconstruction. They are worth our while. And friends of God. Join us and see what I mean. \nI have been weaving Jack’s insights into the foundational work of Marcus Borg. Last year Jack had his inaugural visit. It was a lively and moving session. It is an honor to have Jack return. I can’t wait to hear and see what will unfold. \nWe will be holding these conversations on Zoom. SUMMARY:Bend Discussion - Into the Deep
DESCRIPTION:RSVP Here \nInto the Deep Introduction\nIn June of 2018 the Marcus J. Borg Foundation sponsored our first lecture weekend with speaker Michael Morwood. Following that event many asked us to continue to provide opportunity to explore and re-imagine what it means to be “religious\,” “spiritual\,” “Christian\,” “none\,” “other…”. We are doing just that on the second Saturday of the month in Bend. We invite you to loosen your moorings and venture with us “Into the Deep.” All are welcome. \nApril 13th Discussion – Palm Sunday and Resurrection\nOn Saturday\, April 13\, the day before Palm Sunday\, we will have our final conversation and plunge “Into the Deep” for this spring. \nThe topic will be Palm Sunday and Resurrection. We will consider why the story of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem is provocative and important. And how the story poignantly contrasts rival kingdoms. We will also puzzle about resurrection\, even resurrection of the body\, and what we think it means for us today. \nMarianne Borg and Bill Ellis will continue “Into the Deep” on second Saturdays beginning in October\, 2019 and continuing through April 2020. We will meet at St. Helen’s Hall at Trinity Episcopal Church\, Bend. \nIf you have not been with us before\, come April 13 and be part of the conversation. It is not too late to join us. Each session stands on its own. Come and gather with a wonderful group of people. All are welcome. The sessions are free. \nRSVP Here

According to the Christian liturgical year we will be in the season of Lent. Lent is a time when the question is called about what matters to us\, what we think is possible\, what we think about the human condition\, and the purpose or meaning of life. In keeping with the prompt of the season we will explore WORLDVIEW; our “philosophy of life” or concept of the world. Worldviews are not just individual. They reflect society’s understanding of life as well. We will reflect on our own view of things\, how we got there\, and how it shapes our hopes and fears. We will also include a discussion of Beauty. Which Augustine suggested we cannot live without. \nAll are welcome. Please join us even if this is your first time! \nRSVP Here

This month’s topic: THE SACRED. \nA common dichotomy in religion has been between the sacred and the profane or secular. The sacred being powerful and awe inspiring\, transcending the humdrum of everyday life. The profane being everything else. This strong dualism was long considered to be a universal in religion. But it isn’t. We will explore our understanding of the sacred\, how it can redirect a life positively or coercively\, and reflect on the importance of how we see and why. \nYou do not need to know anything about Emile Durkheim or Mircea Eliade to participate! Come join us whether this is your first time to our conversation or you are returning. We look forward to being with you. \nRSVP Here

This month they will explore MYSTICISM; why it might not only be important but imperative to reexamine and redefine it. At best mysticism has been considered an experience of union with ultimate reality. More pejoratively it has been considered esoteric\, occult\, supernatural\, nebulous\, fuzzy\, privatized. Albeit a realm available to “religious specialists\,” which excludes most of us. We want to unfetter the “mystical experience” from “secret” or “hidden” knowledge and bring it into the every day. Where we experience it. \nCome join in the conversation! All are welcome. This is a free event opportunity. \nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:Bend Group Discussion - Into the Deep\, Seeking God in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:The Marcus J. Borg Foundation hosted author and theologian Michael Morwood in June at Trinity. Michael spoke about “Seeing Jesus through a 21st Century Lens.” There was much discussion and engagement about his thoughts\, perceptions\, and scholarship. Many wanted an opportunity to continue the conversation. We are going to do just that. \nSix gatherings have been scheduled in St. Helens Hall for Into the Deep\, Seeking God in the 21st Century (renamed from Continuing the Conversation). All are on the second Saturday of the month\, beginning November 10th\, and will begin at 9 AM. Everyone is welcome to attend\, whether or not you were able to attend the original session with Michael Morwood. \nRev. Marianne Borg\, founder of the Marcus J. Borg Foundation (sponsor for these conversations)\, and Rev. Bill Ellis co-lead these sessions. We will provide a frame for the morning and guidelines for listening. We count on your participation and learning from one another. \nWe look forward to welcoming a diverse and ecumenical group. Get the word out to friends and neighbors who are seeking a safe\, encouraging\, thoughtful exploration of faith\, religious and spiritual experience\, and Christianity in the 21st century. \nThe topic of this meeting is “Winter Landscape and Unpacking the Christmas Stories.”
