SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - April 11\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Register for April 11 Second Saturday Conversation\nOur next Second Saturday Conversation will be April 11\, 2026. 9:30-11:00 am pacific time. \nI am delighted to welcome John D. Caputo (Jack) and Bernard Brandon Scott (Brandon) who return to Second Saturday. Their conversation will explore “Resurrection: Living Metaphor or Dead?” \nA timely topic. Always. And in this liturgical season of the church year\, Eastertide. Jack and Brandon’s insights will clarify for us what is meant by resurrection. Brandon is an historian. Jack a philosopher/theologian. Brandon is an expert on Paul and the parables of Jesus. He sees through an historical critical lens. (He is also a keen social and political critic.) Jack is a philosopher\, phenomenologist\, theologian and sees through a theopoetic lens. (That’s not as esoteric as it sounds.) To see through their eyes is like seeing with new eyes. Or like putting on 3-D lenses to see those movies in another dimension. Resurrection is so much more and so much less than we have been taught. So join us for this opportunity to explore what for some is the decisive good news of Christianity: resurrection. But just what is resurrection? \nAll our sessions are free. But you need to RSVP to receive a link to the gathering. All are welcome. We are fortunate on Second Saturday to explore Christianity in and for the 21st century. This session will be doing just that. \n“Resurrection: Living Metaphor or Dead?” \nI look forward to seeing you on April 11. And am delighted to welcome back Brandon and Jack. Two of my favorite people. \nRegister for April 11 Second Saturday Conversation\n\nRegister Now for April 11\n\n

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - March 14\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Register for March 14 Second Saturday Conversation\nOur next Second Saturday Conversation is March 14. In January and February I explored John D. Caputo’s book What to Believe? Twelve brief lessons in radical theology. What to Believe is a question. And an important one for us on Second Saturday who think the question is more important than some of the answers we have been given. \nI think Jack’s work is important\, critical for our reimagining what theology is and what we are talking about when we talk about God. And why it matters. \nIn March\, we are delighted to welcome back Mark Oakley\, Dean of Southwick Cathedral\, London. His book A Splash of Words: Believing in Poetry is a wonderful introduction to his thoughts and depths. \nRegister for March 14 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed. \n

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - January 10\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Register for January 10 Second Saturday Conversation\nOur next Second Saturday Conversation is January 10. In January and February I am going to turn to John D. Caputo’s book What to Believe? Twelve brief lessons in radical theology. What to Believe is a question. And an important one for us on Second Saturday who think the question is more important than some of the answers we have been given. \nA number of you have read this book. I hope all of you do. Whether you have read it or not\, I am going to do my best to provide a brief summary. I do so because I think Jack’s work is important\, critical for our reimagining what theology is and what we are talking about when we talk about God. And why it matters. \nQuotes from the book are prompts for our exploration: \n“Radical theology is a theology of the event\, where what matters is not what we believe but what happens\, what breaks into our lives and transforms us.” \n“To believe is not to be certain\, but to live with the risk of hope\, to lean into the unknown with a trembling trust.” \nI can think of no better way to begin a new calendar year than to ask what we believe. And to do so with the guiding hand and heart of Jack Caputo to help us dare to think\, dare to imagine. And dare to remember. \n“Let us remember that we are in the presencing of God\, of the coming to be of God\, of the insistence of God\, of the may-being of God. Let us remember that we are summoned to be part of the history of God\, of God becoming God in the world. Let us remember that with God\, with the event that is harbored in the name (of) ‘God\,’ all things are possible\, up to\, and including the impossible.” \nRegister for January 10 Second Saturday Conversation\nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.NameFirstLastEmail *Email List SignupI would like to sign up for the Marcus J Borg Foundation email list to receive emails about future events and announcements. SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - December 13\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Register for December 13 Second Saturday Conversation\nOur next Second Saturday Conversation is December 13. We have a special guest\, a return guest: John D. Caputo. The nuns who taught him in grade school called him John. We get to call him Jack. Jack is the very kind of theologian he hopes for. \nJack’s knowledge of the world of thought and perception\, religion and the meaning of our lived experience from a first-person perspective (which is one way Google defines phenomenology) is shaping the depths and contours of these fields in and for the 21st century. His work is important. He is important. \nJack is going to help us reflect on why it is imperative we get rid of the idea of supernatural theism once and for all. I say supernatural theism has tyrannized the theological world and the religious imagination for too long. Jack can help us think this through. And see with new eyes. \nI cannot think of a better Advent season gift to us than spending time with Jack Caputo. December 13 is also St. Lucy’s feast day. The patron saint of the blind. Her attribute is the lamp. So\, Jack’s date with us couldn’t be more fitting. \nAll of our gatherings are free. But you must RSVP to receive a link to the session. The link will be sent the day before and morning of December 13. (Be sure to check your junk/spam email if you have registered but don’t see your link sent on December 13!) \nWelcome to all those who have made Second Saturday Conversation a gathering place for community\, curiosity and kindness. And welcome to those who are coming for the first time. May this session shed some needed light on our path. \nI look forward to being with you and Jack on December 13. \n—Marianne \nRegister for December 13 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - November 15\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Register for November 15 Second Saturday Conversation\nOur next Second Saturday Conversation is November 15\, 2025. I will recall some insights from our guest in October\, Arthur Dewey. He reminded us and illustrated for us the transformative and disclosive power of non-literal language. Some experiences can best be expressed non-literally. As Marcus says\, some experiences can only be expressed non-literally. “Words that open… as real as you\,” as Art put it in one of his poems. We will continue our reflections on the importance of language. \nRegistration is now closed.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - October 11\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Register for October 11 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed. \nOur next Second Saturday Conversation is October 11\, 2025. And we have a special guest\, Arthur Dewey. He is Professor of Theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati. A New Testament scholar\, Art has written extensively about Paul\, Jesus\, the Gospel of Thomas\, the passion narrative. He is also part of the Westar Institute and was involved in the work of the Jesus Seminar. Arthur is also a poet. \nArt Dewey will help us explore language and imagination\, what is real and what is hope. Of interest to Second Saturday folks\, Art knew Amos Wilder (1895-1993)\, an early voice in Theopoetics and the religious imagination. (I provide a quote below from Wilder.) \nHere is Art’s invitation to us: \n—\n\n“Don’t you know that you’re in heaven?”\n\nNon sai tu che tu se ‘in cielo? Para. 22.7 \nA conversation on the edge of things with Art Dewey. \nHow do we talk to each other about what counts\, especially in our present situation? We are inundated with data\, desperate over the constant undermining of our civil life\, paralyzed by the oncoming tsunami of climate change\, distracted by screen upon screen. How do we begin to weave some sense in our lives? Perhaps we start by remembering\, by taking small steps into the interior. \nBut what happens when we stop and make the effort to look beyond the literal? Do we have any companions in this curious enterprise? Is consciousness more than an isolation booth? Could it be that we are entangled in more than meets our eye? What if Truth itself is more than fact? What happens if we meet the unforgettable? Do we even have words for this? \nWould you like to talk?\n\n— \nI think I can speak for all of us on who engage in Second Saturday Conversation: Yes\, we would like to talk! But first we will listen. On October 11\, 2025. \nAll are welcome. All our sessions are free. But you must RSVP to receive a link for our Second Saturday Conversation on October 11\, 2025. We begin at 9:30 am pacific time. We close at 11:00 am pacific time. \nI look forward to our time with Arthur. He gets us. He is a companion in the fragile craft of saying the unsayable\, a fellow traveler through the landscapes and inscapes of our deeply entangled lives. Join us for A Conversation on the Edge of Things with Art Dewey. \nA quote from Amos Wilder: \n“It is at the level of the imagination that the fateful issues of our new world-experience must first be mastered. It is here that culture and history are broken\, and here that the church is polarized. Old words do not reach across the new gulfs\, and it is only in vision and oracle that we can chart the unknown and new-name the creatures. Before the message\, there must be the vision\, before the sermon the hymn\, before the prose the poem. Before any new theologies however secular and radical there must be a contemporary theo-poetic.” (Italics mine.) \nRegister for October 11 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - April 12\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Children in the Snow: Reclaiming a Poetic Faith\nSecond Saturday April 12\, 2025\, I am honored to announce we will have special guest Mark Oakley\, British Church of England priest\, Dean of Southwark Cathedral in London and formerly Dean of St. John’s College Cambridge. He is an author\, lecturer\, broadcaster\, whose love for poetry and theology will change our view of both. \nI became aware of Mark Oakley reading the award winning The Splash of Words: Believing in Poetry. The subtitle having a nice double entendre. Poetry and belief when they share the same house become “More numerous of Windows — Superior — for Doors” to borrow from Emily Dickinson. \nPoetry is the language that most truly reflects the life of the soul; it is the person of faith’s native language\, claims Oakley. “Both poetry and Faith work to challenge the sleepwalking life… [‘interrupt our snoring’]… Poetry and Faith reflect parts of each other… as they deepen and not resolve the meanings\, mysteries and mayhem of the world\, and the rumor of God that encircles it\, infuses it.” Don’t let “poetry” put you off saying it’s not my thing. Let Mark Oakley lead you into it. I say you will find yourself a home. A home that has been waiting for you. Perhaps for years. \nThe title of Mark’s conversation with us is Children in the Snow: Reclaiming a Poetic Faith. He borrows from American poet Wallace Stevens who said “people should like poetry the way a child likes snow…” Mark Oakley can help us like “snow\,” maybe for the first time\, re-imagine our landscape of faith\, reinvigorate our wonder and longing for God. \nIn our time when language is literalized and flattened\, used as a blunt instrument devoid of spirit and musicality\, when “Christianity today so often appears to be a choice between ignorance on fire and intelligence on ice\,” we are fortunate to have Mark Oakley whose humanity is near to our own. “The truth is far too important to be literalistic with\,” he says. And “God is not to be the easy object of our knowledge\, but the deeper cause of our wonder.” \nI look forward to this opportunity to be with you and Mark Oakley. After our last Second Session I posed the prophet Jeremiah’s question: “Is there no balm in Gilead?” We may rediscover it with Mark Oakley. \nAll our sessions are free. And open to all. You must RSVP to receive a link for our April\, 12 Second Saturday Conversation. You will receive the link the day before and morning of April 12. (Be sure to check your JUNK email if you have registered but don’t see your link sent on April 12!) \nDon’t miss this opportunity to be with Mark Oakley. What a way to enter Holy Week. \nRegister for April 12 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - March 8\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Excuse Me? Interrupting on Behalf of Justice.\nOn Second Saturday Conversation March 8\, 2025\, we are honored to have with us Robin Meyers. The Rev. Dr. Robin Meyers. Robin is a peace activist (is that a dated term? I hope not)\, philosopher\, pastor\, professor\, civil rights leader\, educator\, author\, public voice. He is also a fellow of the Westar Institute whose mission is to raise biblical and religious literacy. Robin self describes as offering a non-literal\, non-dogmatic\, profoundly subversive and counter-cultural understanding of what it means to follow Jesus. Robin speaks with provocative clarity and challenging forthrightness as we see in some of his book titles: Saving Jesus from the Church\, Spiritual Defiance\, Saving God from Religion. \nMarcus always spoke highly and admiringly of Robin and his work. He urged me to pay attention to what Robin was doing and would be doing in the future. \nMarcus died in 2015. Some traditions consider remembrances on the tenth death anniversary year particularly important. Having Robin with us is part of the tenth year remembrance of Marcus’s work and spirit. Marcus is no longer here. But Robin is. He continues life work that was Marcus’s life work as well. \nRobin suggested this title for our session together: Excuse Me? Interrupting on Behalf of Justice. Here is how he describes possibilities for our conversation together: \n“One of the principal roles of prophetic rhetoric is to interrupt on behalf of the unconditionality of justice. There are times when we can wait out what is happening around us and times when—because we are running out of time—we must interrupt. Jesus was a cosmic interruption. Prophets interrupt with their impatient urgency. Ordinary people can also interrupt\, with their bodies\, as well as with their words\, by refusing to be in compliance with what the Bible calls ‘the principalities and the powers.’ We are living in a moment when the good\, the true\, and the just are being disassembled right before our eyes. Can I get an ‘excuse me?'” \nPlease join us for Second Saturday Conversation March 8\, 2025 with special guest Robin Meyers. All of our gatherings are free. But you must RSVP to receive a link to the session. You will receive a link the day before and morning of March 8. We meet from 9:30-11:00 am pacific time. \nIn advance\, thank you Robin for being part of this tenth year remembrance of Marcus and his work. And for the way you voice and embody the call to do Justice\, love kindness\, walk humbly and to do so boldly. \nLook forward to being with you March 8. \nRegister for March 8 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed for this event.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - October 12\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:On our Second Saturday Conversation October 12\, 2024 we will host Bernard Brandon Scott. Brandon teaches and writes with insight and originality. He has a depth of knowledge on Jesus’ parables\, Paul\, resurrection (!)\, the early communities of Jesus followers and current social and political issues of public debate. \nBrandon was a founding member of the Jesus Seminar\, a project of the Westar Institute\, which changed the public conversation about the Bible and Christianity. He continues to be a contributor to the work of Westar which is dedicated to raising biblical and religious literacy. \nBrandon is also a bird watcher and fine photographer which only confirms the breadth of his skills in the art of paying attention\, perception\, and framing subject matter. \nI have asked Brandon to talk with us about Christian nationalism. Second Saturday Conversation explores Christianity in and for the 21st century. Christian nationalism is arguably a political movement. But its self naming suggests its concerns are theological as well. I had dismissed this movement. But I am learning that Christian nationalism is sophisticated in its use of social media and very well funded. The influence and consequences of Christian nationalism are deeply concerning. Brandon has been following the development of this movement. As an historian and theologian\, a trustworthy thinker and observer\, I want Brandon to bring his observations and thoughts and help us with ours. Because I now realize this is a topic not to be dismissed I decided to bring Christian nationalism directly to our attention and conversation. \nAll our sessions are free but you must RSVP to receive a link to the session. We will send a link the day before and morning of October 12. \nRegister for October 12 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - February 10\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Standing Together in Awe:\nFour Stages in our Learning to Love the Natural World \n“We are talking to our selves. We are not talking to the rivers. We are not listening to the rivers. We are not listening to the wind and stars. We have broken the great conversation.. [Evenso] The present is not a time for desperation but hopeful activity.” So writes Thomas Berry\, Catholic priest and evolutionary theologian (1924-2009). \nWith hopeful activity in mind I am delighted to announce our guest for Second Saturday Conversation February 10\, 2024\, Belden C. Lane. Belden is a pastor\, professor\, author\, lover of nature\, lover of souls and like Berry a prophet to the earth. \nBelden writes and speaks with a poet’s vision and humble heart drawing on the “two books tradition” of scripture and nature. With curiosity\, vulnerability and playfulness Belden will turn our senses and awareness toward the living natural world\, the larger sacred community of which we are a part\, and also call upon voices from varied traditions to urge us to return and rejoin the great conversation. The great work required for our future. \nBelden writes: \nHere at the end of my academic career\, I realize at last how theology must always be done\, how the tradition of the saints must ever be read: over against the howling of wind in the dark of night; on a wilderness crag where beauty and danger intertwine; amid the pain and mystery of a world that dances through tears. \nBelden will help us dance. Through our tears. A hopeful activity dearly needed as we urgently seek to find our way in this bewildered and fragmented world. Beldon is a master guide of both inner and outer landscape. \nI look forward to sharing this time with you and Belden as he shares his journey and deep spirituality and practice. \nAll our gatherings are free. All are welcome. Bring along a curious friend. You must RSVP to receive a link. The links are sent out the day before and morning of. Please register now. \nRegister for February 10 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - December 9\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:On December 9\, 2023 we have two guests returning together to Second Saturday Conversation. Jack Caputo and Brandon Scott will dialogue about Jesus. How we see Jesus makes all the difference. \nFor me\, Jesus is the heart of Christianity. But what does that mean? Historically we know quite a bit about Jesus. But even more has been said about him. Jesus was given the titles of Caesar: King\, Lord\, Savior\, Bringer of Peace\, born of a virgin\, son of God. He was also called God with us\, lamb of God\, “ikon of the invisible God.” He is seated at the right hand of God and he will come again. What do we make of all this? Who do we say that he is? And what does it mean to say we follow him? In the 21st century we continue to puzzle\, wonder\, and interpret. \nJack and Brandon will provide their own understandings and interpretation of Jesus. Jack is a theologian for our time. We need him in our post-modern turn as we move into a future we can’t see coming. Jack helps us do so with hope against hope. Brandon is an historian and biblical scholar who brings an ear and clarity to Jesus and his parables. We cannot talk about Jesus without talking about his parables. Jack and Brandon have been wrestling with Jesus their entire lives. What wondrous work is this. They will share with us what they see and have come to know. \nI am a fan and admirer of both Jack and Brandon. As was Marcus. I only wish Marcus were here to engage in this conversation. I am so glad Jack and Brandon are. It is our privilege and honor to have them as our guests. This is a session not to be missed. It is timely\, and important. \nSpoiler alert. We will explore what happens when we raise Jesus to theopoetic space. \nAll our gatherings are free. All are welcome. Bring along a curious friend. You must RSVP to receive a link. The links are sent out the day before and morning of December 9. Please register now. \nI look forward to being with you. And Jack and Brandon. We will save a chair for Elijah. \n—Marianne \nRegister for December 9 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed.
