SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - April 12\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Children in the Snow: Reclaiming a Poetic Faith\nSecond Saturday April 12\, 2025\, I am honored to announce we will have special guest Mark Oakley\, British Church of England priest\, Dean of Southwark Cathedral in London and formerly Dean of St. John’s College Cambridge. He is an author\, lecturer\, broadcaster\, whose love for poetry and theology will change our view of both. \nI became aware of Mark Oakley reading the award winning The Splash of Words: Believing in Poetry. The subtitle having a nice double entendre. Poetry and belief when they share the same house become “More numerous of Windows — Superior — for Doors” to borrow from Emily Dickinson. \nPoetry is the language that most truly reflects the life of the soul; it is the person of faith’s native language\, claims Oakley. “Both poetry and Faith work to challenge the sleepwalking life… [‘interrupt our snoring’]… Poetry and Faith reflect parts of each other… as they deepen and not resolve the meanings\, mysteries and mayhem of the world\, and the rumor of God that encircles it\, infuses it.” Don’t let “poetry” put you off saying it’s not my thing. Let Mark Oakley lead you into it. I say you will find yourself a home. A home that has been waiting for you. Perhaps for years. \nThe title of Mark’s conversation with us is Children in the Snow: Reclaiming a Poetic Faith. He borrows from American poet Wallace Stevens who said “people should like poetry the way a child likes snow…” Mark Oakley can help us like “snow\,” maybe for the first time\, re-imagine our landscape of faith\, reinvigorate our wonder and longing for God. \nIn our time when language is literalized and flattened\, used as a blunt instrument devoid of spirit and musicality\, when “Christianity today so often appears to be a choice between ignorance on fire and intelligence on ice\,” we are fortunate to have Mark Oakley whose humanity is near to our own. “The truth is far too important to be literalistic with\,” he says. And “God is not to be the easy object of our knowledge\, but the deeper cause of our wonder.” \nI look forward to this opportunity to be with you and Mark Oakley. After our last Second Session I posed the prophet Jeremiah’s question: “Is there no balm in Gilead?” We may rediscover it with Mark Oakley. \nAll our sessions are free. And open to all. You must RSVP to receive a link for our April\, 12 Second Saturday Conversation. You will receive the link the day before and morning of April 12. (Be sure to check your JUNK email if you have registered but don’t see your link sent on April 12!) \nDon’t miss this opportunity to be with Mark Oakley. What a way to enter Holy Week. \nRegister for April 12 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - March 8\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Excuse Me? Interrupting on Behalf of Justice.\nOn Second Saturday Conversation March 8\, 2025\, we are honored to have with us Robin Meyers. The Rev. Dr. Robin Meyers. Robin is a peace activist (is that a dated term? I hope not)\, philosopher\, pastor\, professor\, civil rights leader\, educator\, author\, public voice. He is also a fellow of the Westar Institute whose mission is to raise biblical and religious literacy. Robin self describes as offering a non-literal\, non-dogmatic\, profoundly subversive and counter-cultural understanding of what it means to follow Jesus. Robin speaks with provocative clarity and challenging forthrightness as we see in some of his book titles: Saving Jesus from the Church\, Spiritual Defiance\, Saving God from Religion. \nMarcus always spoke highly and admiringly of Robin and his work. He urged me to pay attention to what Robin was doing and would be doing in the future. \nMarcus died in 2015. Some traditions consider remembrances on the tenth death anniversary year particularly important. Having Robin with us is part of the tenth year remembrance of Marcus’s work and spirit. Marcus is no longer here. But Robin is. He continues life work that was Marcus’s life work as well. \nRobin suggested this title for our session together: Excuse Me? Interrupting on Behalf of Justice. Here is how he describes possibilities for our conversation together: \n“One of the principal roles of prophetic rhetoric is to interrupt on behalf of the unconditionality of justice. There are times when we can wait out what is happening around us and times when—because we are running out of time—we must interrupt. Jesus was a cosmic interruption. Prophets interrupt with their impatient urgency. Ordinary people can also interrupt\, with their bodies\, as well as with their words\, by refusing to be in compliance with what the Bible calls ‘the principalities and the powers.’ We are living in a moment when the good\, the true\, and the just are being disassembled right before our eyes. Can I get an ‘excuse me?'” \nPlease join us for Second Saturday Conversation March 8\, 2025 with special guest Robin Meyers. All of our gatherings are free. But you must RSVP to receive a link to the session. You will receive a link the day before and morning of March 8. We meet from 9:30-11:00 am pacific time. \nIn advance\, thank you Robin for being part of this tenth year remembrance of Marcus and his work. And for the way you voice and embody the call to do Justice\, love kindness\, walk humbly and to do so boldly. \nLook forward to being with you March 8. \nRegister for March 8 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed for this event.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - October 12\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:On our Second Saturday Conversation October 12\, 2024 we will host Bernard Brandon Scott. Brandon teaches and writes with insight and originality. He has a depth of knowledge on Jesus’ parables\, Paul\, resurrection (!)\, the early communities of Jesus followers and current social and political issues of public debate. \nBrandon was a founding member of the Jesus Seminar\, a project of the Westar Institute\, which changed the public conversation about the Bible and Christianity. He continues to be a contributor to the work of Westar which is dedicated to raising biblical and religious literacy. \nBrandon is also a bird watcher and fine photographer which only confirms the breadth of his skills in the art of paying attention\, perception\, and framing subject matter. \nI have asked Brandon to talk with us about Christian nationalism. Second Saturday Conversation explores Christianity in and for the 21st century. Christian nationalism is arguably a political movement. But its self naming suggests its concerns are theological as well. I had dismissed this movement. But I am learning that Christian nationalism is sophisticated in its use of social media and very well funded. The influence and consequences of Christian nationalism are deeply concerning. Brandon has been following the development of this movement. As an historian and theologian\, a trustworthy thinker and observer\, I want Brandon to bring his observations and thoughts and help us with ours. Because I now realize this is a topic not to be dismissed I decided to bring Christian nationalism directly to our attention and conversation. \nAll our sessions are free but you must RSVP to receive a link to the session. We will send a link the day before and morning of October 12. \nRegister for October 12 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - February 10\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Standing Together in Awe:\nFour Stages in our Learning to Love the Natural World \n“We are talking to our selves. We are not talking to the rivers. We are not listening to the rivers. We are not listening to the wind and stars. We have broken the great conversation.. [Evenso] The present is not a time for desperation but hopeful activity.” So writes Thomas Berry\, Catholic priest and evolutionary theologian (1924-2009). \nWith hopeful activity in mind I am delighted to announce our guest for Second Saturday Conversation February 10\, 2024\, Belden C. Lane. Belden is a pastor\, professor\, author\, lover of nature\, lover of souls and like Berry a prophet to the earth. \nBelden writes and speaks with a poet’s vision and humble heart drawing on the “two books tradition” of scripture and nature. With curiosity\, vulnerability and playfulness Belden will turn our senses and awareness toward the living natural world\, the larger sacred community of which we are a part\, and also call upon voices from varied traditions to urge us to return and rejoin the great conversation. The great work required for our future. \nBelden writes: \nHere at the end of my academic career\, I realize at last how theology must always be done\, how the tradition of the saints must ever be read: over against the howling of wind in the dark of night; on a wilderness crag where beauty and danger intertwine; amid the pain and mystery of a world that dances through tears. \nBelden will help us dance. Through our tears. A hopeful activity dearly needed as we urgently seek to find our way in this bewildered and fragmented world. Beldon is a master guide of both inner and outer landscape. \nI look forward to sharing this time with you and Belden as he shares his journey and deep spirituality and practice. \nAll our gatherings are free. All are welcome. Bring along a curious friend. You must RSVP to receive a link. The links are sent out the day before and morning of. Please register now. \nRegister for February 10 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - December 9\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:On December 9\, 2023 we have two guests returning together to Second Saturday Conversation. Jack Caputo and Brandon Scott will dialogue about Jesus. How we see Jesus makes all the difference. \nFor me\, Jesus is the heart of Christianity. But what does that mean? Historically we know quite a bit about Jesus. But even more has been said about him. Jesus was given the titles of Caesar: King\, Lord\, Savior\, Bringer of Peace\, born of a virgin\, son of God. He was also called God with us\, lamb of God\, “ikon of the invisible God.” He is seated at the right hand of God and he will come again. What do we make of all this? Who do we say that he is? And what does it mean to say we follow him? In the 21st century we continue to puzzle\, wonder\, and interpret. \nJack and Brandon will provide their own understandings and interpretation of Jesus. Jack is a theologian for our time. We need him in our post-modern turn as we move into a future we can’t see coming. Jack helps us do so with hope against hope. Brandon is an historian and biblical scholar who brings an ear and clarity to Jesus and his parables. We cannot talk about Jesus without talking about his parables. Jack and Brandon have been wrestling with Jesus their entire lives. What wondrous work is this. They will share with us what they see and have come to know. \nI am a fan and admirer of both Jack and Brandon. As was Marcus. I only wish Marcus were here to engage in this conversation. I am so glad Jack and Brandon are. It is our privilege and honor to have them as our guests. This is a session not to be missed. It is timely\, and important. \nSpoiler alert. We will explore what happens when we raise Jesus to theopoetic space. \nAll our gatherings are free. All are welcome. Bring along a curious friend. You must RSVP to receive a link. The links are sent out the day before and morning of December 9. Please register now. \nI look forward to being with you. And Jack and Brandon. We will save a chair for Elijah. \n—Marianne \nRegister for December 9 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed.

DESCRIPTION:Join our Second Saturday Conversation. All sessions are free. But you need to RSVP in order to receive a link. The link will be sent out October 13 and the morning of October 14. \nTheopoetics. What is it? An Invitation.\nWith special guest Scott Holland \nTheopoetics might be hard to define. But Scott Holland will help us get a sense of what it is and isn’t. Scott is a major voice today in exploring\, articulating\, ‘doing’ Theopoetics. He will tell us how and why it emerged and why it is important. For us. Scott is warm\, clear\, inviting. His is just the voice we need. \nAn introduction to Scott Holland: Scott is a pastor. He is a peace activist. He is a professor. He has worked with the World Counsel of Churches and peace churches in Africa\, Asia\, Europe\, the Americas. He is published in Theopoetics\, theology and culture\, peace studies. He teaches Theopoetics through Bethany Theological Seminary in a Masters Program in Theopoetics and Writing. \nWe have referenced Theopoetics during many Second Saturdays. The name sounds fancy. But don’t let it put you off or think it is above your pay grade. Theopoetics honors the everyday. Depends on it. The every day is after all where we find ourselves. \nThis Second Saturday Conversation will be foundational for all of us. It is an honor to have Scott be our guest. \nRegister for October 14 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - May 13\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:So What? A conversation with the one and only John D. Caputo.\nMay 13 we welcome to our conversation John (Jack) D. Caputo. Jack has been our guest on a number of occasions. Those who follow Second Saturday Conversation know Jack has been very influential in my reimagining and wondering about Christianity in and for the 21st century. Marcus is my foundation for Biblical and contextual thinking for understanding Jesus and the New Testament. Jack brings another discipline to my awareness. Continental philosophy. Without him I would not have ventured. Even with him I am only ankle deep. If that. But it is a start. What Jack brings to our conversation is nothing short of radical theology which in my opinion is the only future of theology. \nJack’s most recent book is titled Specters of God: An Anatomy of the Apophatic Imagination. What I love about this title is that it really doesn’t explain itself. It is rather an invitation to thought beyond thought. It suggests we are haunted by something and that what haunts us is neither this nor that. (To borrow from the Sanskrit Neti Neti\, which I learned about in a comparative religion class.) Nothing is fixed. Or perhaps is as it appears. But that does not prevent us from efforts to language our experience. Which is what we attempt on Second Saturday Conversation as we explore Christianity in and for the 21st century. Jack in his poetic\, suggestive\, non-dogmatic\, illuminating way will help us explore and imagine what is suggested by specters of God without claiming more than we can. But without negating what claims us either. \nIn addition I am going to ask him the “so what?” question. Jack often will end an eloquent reflection with “so what?” I have given him a hard time about that. I have heard that as a dismissive line. But I am mistaken. To ask the “so what?” question is important. When all is said and done\, for the moment anyway\, so what? That calls the question. Yes\, so what? \nJoin us for an always challenging and inviting conversation with Jack Caputo. \nAll sessions are free. But you need to RSVP in order to receive a link. The link will be sent out May 12 and the morning of May 13. \nRegister for May 13 Second Saturday Conversation\nRegistration is now closed.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - February 11\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:RSVP Here \nSecond Saturday Conversation\n \nEpiphany: what we can’t see coming \nOur February 11 Second Saturday Conversation falls in the Christian liturgical season of Epiphany. The word epiphany suggests a manifestation of something otherwise hidden. I suggest that what is “hidden” is not something already made. But something new\, unforeseeable\, “impossible.” Epiphanies underscore that the way it has been is not always the way it will be. Things can be otherwise. For me that is good news. But it implies risk. \nKierkegaard (and I am indebted to those who read Kierkegaard and highlight for me\, namely thank you Jack Caputo) suggests that the difficulty with life is our wanting to make it easy. What is lacking is difficulty. \n“…when all join together to make everything easier in every way\, there remains only one possible danger\, namely\, the danger that the easiness would become so great that it would become all too easy. So only one lack remains\, even though not yet felt\, the lack of difficulty.” (And Kierkegaard was concerned that this lack of difficulty contributed to what he called “bourgeois Christianity.”) \nDifficulty for difficulties sake is not what I am curious about. But acknowledging difficulty as honest and even hopeful is. \nI look forward in this session to exploring our aversion to risk and our “lack of difficulty” and how perhaps accepting and facing uncertainty and difficulty holds more hope than burden. Help me wonder about this. \nJoin our Second Saturday Conversation. All sessions are free. But you need to RSVP in order to receive a link. The link will be sent out February 10 and the morning of February 11. \nI look forward to our time together. \n—Marianne \nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Conversation - January 14\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:RSVP Here \nSecond Saturday Conversation\n\nSpecial guest Barbara Brown Taylor \nYes best selling author\, a beautiful writer; yes acclaimed as one of America’s best preachers (that’s a good thing); yes\, awake\, compassionate and an Episcopal Priest\, (it’s possible); yes\, an educator par excellence\, helping us seek\, question\, wonder in the necessary process of “dying to old boundaries in order to find new life out beyond the buoys.” Hers is a journey that required leaving home for parts unknown and an ever widening sea. Reflecting with her on her journey will help midwife our own. \nBarbara is perceptive. Candid. Authentic. Lit from within. Her light provides light for our own paths. \nI will be forever grateful for the light she shown upon me. She gave the homily at Marcus’s memorial service at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland in March 2015. I only wish he had been there to hear it. Perhaps he did. Reverberations of affirmation and love and blessing. Barbara Brown Taylor’s presence and work reverberates. Like a singing bowl. \nIt is an honor and opportunity for us to have Barbara as our guest on January 14. I will explore with her a number of topics including what she makes of Christianity in and for the 21st century. Which is what Second Saturday Conversation is all about. \nI look forward to being with you and Barbara. Tell your friends about this session and have them join us. A new year’s gift. \n—Marianne \nRSVP Here
